JUST IN: Labour Begins Indefinite Strike on Monday Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) president, Comrade Joe Ajaero has said that the Organised Labour would embark on an indefinite nationwide strike on Monday, June 3. The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, disclosed this at an ongoing press briefing in Labour House, Abuja. He said the strike is due to the failure of the federal government to conclude negotiations on a new national minimum wage and reverse the hike in the electricity tariff. Edo Govt Fulfiled Promise, Begins Payment Of N70,000 Minimum Wage To Workers The Edo State Government has begun paying the N70,000 new minimum wage to workers in the state. This is in fulfillment of the promise to increase the minimum wage from May 2024. During the recent inauguration of the Labour House in Benin City, the state capital, Governor Godwin Obaseki announced the increase of the minimum wage for workers in the state from N40,000 to N70,000 to cushion the impacts of the harsh economy on the people of the state. In a statement on Sunday, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, said the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage to the workers further demonstrates the commitment of the Obaseki-led administration to the welfare of Edo workers. JUST-IN: FG Sues 36 States At Supreme Court Over Local Govt Autonomy The federal government has sued the thirty-six governors before the Supreme Court to ensure the autonomy of the nation’s local governments. In the suit, marked SC/CV/343/2024, was filed on May 20, by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) on behalf of the federal government. The federal government is praying the Apex Court for an order prohibiting state governors from unilateral, arbitrary, and unlawful dissolution of democratically elected leaders for local governments. It also prayed the Supreme Court for an order permitting the funds standing in the credits of local governments to be directly channelled to them from the federation account in line with the provisions of the Constitution as against the alleged unlawful joint accounts created by governors.
