It was eulogies all the way for the Distinguished Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Dr. Yunus Akintunde, as stakeholders across the district showered him with encomiums over his outstanding performance at a well-attended senatorial district meeting held at Labamba Hotel, Oyo.
Speaking at the event, former Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Senator Ayo Adeseun, alongside the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Alhaji Olaide Abass, and several other party leaders and stakeholders, commended Senator Akintunde for what they described as exceptional and record-breaking representation since his election into the National Assembly.
In a heartfelt tribute, Senator Adeseun recalled his tenure and relationship with Senator Akintunde, noting that the Distinguished Senator has surpassed expectations.
“I had a fantastic record while representing Oyo Central Senatorial District during my tenure. Senator Akintunde was my close political associate and younger friend, and he gave me tremendous support. Today, I stand with pride and utmost satisfaction to acknowledge that he has performed beyond expectations, surpassing established records. This gives me personal fulfilment and joy, like a father whose son has attained greater heights in his lifetime,” Adeseun stated.
Earlier in the programme, following a welcome address by Dr. Joshua Oyebamiji, the APC Oyo Central Senatorial District Chairman, Senator Akintunde presented an extensive account of his legislative and constituency achievements. His presentation, described as impressive and unprecedented, earned him a standing ovation from participants, led enthusiastically by Senator Adeseun.
Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle, Executive Director South West Development Commission, serving and former Members of the Federal House of Representatives including Prince Akeem Adeyemi (Skimeh), Tolulope Sadipe, Oloye Akin Alabi, Segun Odebunmi (Bonvic) various aspirants, top leaders and critical stakeholders gracefully attended the event.
Among the highlights of Senator Akintunde’s legislative accomplishments are his sponsorship of landmark and impactful bills, including those facilitating the upgrade of leading federal institutions offering diploma and certificate programmes to full university status. Notably, the Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, and the Federal College of Education (Special) are now at the final stage of validation to become the Federal University of Geomatics, Oyo, and the Federal University of Special Education, Oyo, respectively.
On constituency development, Senator Akintunde has facilitated the construction and rehabilitation of over 40 schools, provision of 118 solar-powered boreholes, installation of over 10,000 solar street lights, and extensive human capacity development programmes. Beneficiaries include artisans such as automobile mechanics, tailors, welders, farmers, IT and telecom technicians, as well as traders, who received equipment and seed capital. These interventions were equitably distributed across the 11 local government areas of the senatorial district.
In addition, the Senator facilitated numerous employment opportunities for constituents in key Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), including the Federal Inland Revenue Service (now Nigeria Revenue Service), Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Nigerian Correctional Service, among others.
Stakeholders at the meeting noted that Senator Akintunde commands widespread respect within the National Assembly and across the political landscape, a stature that makes it difficult to believe he is a first-time serving Senator.
The meeting also re affirmed the position of Oyo State All Progressives Congress on the adoption of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the sole Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming general elections while also appreciating the commitment and excellent performances of serving elected senators and representatives of All Progressives Congress from Oyo State.
Key highlight of the event was the collective resolution of all stakeholders, leadership and party faithful to strategically position the party towards total victory in all the stages of the forthcoming election in 2027.
