Oyo: There Is No Dilemma - Akin Alabi Reacts To Debate Over Sharafadeen Alli’s Governorship Ambition
Recent discussions on social media have attempted to create a perceived conflict between Senator Sharafadeen Alli’s progression in the Ibadan traditional chieftaincy hierarchy and his political aspirations, particularly regarding the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State.
The debate followed a video shared by Oyo Affairs on X which sparked reactions after an Ibadan man expressed concern over what he described as a possible dilemma Senator Sharafadeen Alli may face as he progresses in the Ibadan traditional chieftaincy line, questioning whether he may eventually have to forfeit the throne path for any governorship ambition.
In response to the post, House of Representatives member, and Ajia Olubadan of Ibadanland, Hon Akin Alabi, dismissed the concern, insisting there is no dilemma.
According to Akin Alabi:
"There is no dilemma. Sen Sharafadeen Alli will become the Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland while the current Abese Balogun of Ibadanland, Oloye Agba Samuel Adegboyega Adeniran will become the Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland."
When another X user, Sule, asked:
"What will now happen to his governorship ambition?"
Akin Alabi replied:
"Very alive and well. There is no correlation."
Several other commentators have also pointed out that participation in the traditional succession process does not automatically extinguish political aspirations. They argue that even in the hypothetical circumstance of Senator Alli attaining a higher traditional status before any election cycle, the decision to contest would remain a personal one, subject to existing laws and constitutional provisions.
As it stands, Senator Sharafadeen Alli continues to advance within the revered Ibadan traditional structure while remaining an active and relevant political figure. The two paths are not mutually exclusive, and there is currently no indication that one undermines the other.
