Politics to some people is a way of acquire wealth from public funds through lies and unclean methods, while to some is a philanthropical ways of serving people through the use of public funds to cater for the welfarism of generality.
Politics according to the Greek: ( Πολιτικά, politiká, 'affairs of the cities') is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status. Like many other politicians around Nigeria especially in the Peace Setter State from the city of metropolitan Ibadan, Akin Alabi's political ideology seem different, especially from what other political gladiators in the state has demonstrated, and his chance of becoming one of the major factor in the political terrain of Oyo state is very high with the way he moves.
Who is Akin Alabi?
He was born in Ibadan, Ọyọ State, Nigeria, to Chief and Chief (Mrs) Adediran Alabi. As a preteen Akin completed his primary education at Command Children School, Ibadan, and secondary school education at Federal Government College Enugu.
He later proceeded his education journey to a lead city University, Ibadan where he was awarded Bachelor of Science in politics and international relations. He also attended the Polytechnic, Ibadan, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in business administration. He also holds a Masters of Science (Msc) degree in marketing from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom. In addition, he also holds a certificate in Intellectual Property Strategy from Harvard University, Boston, United States.
Akin Alabi started his business career in 2003 writing and selling books, manuals and other information products. He then launched his own seminar and training company specializing in teaching and consulting for other young people starting their own small businesses. He also started publishing a business opportunity newspaper titled Income (now rested). To add to his publishing enterprise, Akin launched, World Soccer News, a weekly sports newspaper.
Hon. Akin Alabi has gone on to build many other businesses from scratch; one of them is NairaBET, Nigeria's first online sports betting portal, with outlets across Nigeria. He got the idea for NairaBET when he visited the United Kingdom and went to a sports betting shop. He created an information manual about it and sold online. The success of the product prompted him to start his own online sports betting platform in Nigeria. Nairabet.com has its headquarters in Lagos with its nationwide operation regulated by the National Lottery Regulatory Commission. NairaBET is Nigeria's first sports betting company.
Akin Alabi also involved in the Nigerian entertainment industry. He is the founder of Nightlife.NG, an online portal that showcases and reports the nightlife industry in Nigeria.
Hon. Akin Alabi has also contributed immensely to both local and international sports, donating sport items to many Nigeria and European football teams. He is the founder of Lekki FC and some other football teams in Nigeria.
Hon. Akin Alabi has been involving in many philanthropical works. He has help many Nigerian youths to reach the top of their career, sponsored some on their education career and assisted many in both business and professional career. He is the founder of Akin Alabi Foundation, a non-governmental, not for profit outfit, aimed at improving the well-being of the average Nigerian. With the motto, "touching lives one person at a time"; the foundation has successfully implemented projects like building and donating classrooms to primary schools, sinking of bore holes in areas where there is scarcity of water and financial empowerment for widows and young people.
His Political life
Though he loves both sport and politics, Hon. Akin Alabi joined politics when he contested for federal house of assembly to represent Egbeda/Ona-Ara in 2015 under people's Democratic Party (PDP) and he was defeated by Hon. Michael Akintola of APC. He didn't allowed the defeat to discouraged him from achieving his mission of becoming legislator in the Green Chamber. He restrategised, reenergised, reboot and contested again in 2019 but under All Progressives Congress (APC). Akin Alabi with different ideologies he brought to Egbeda/Ona-Ara political terrain in 2019, he defeated both the incumbent lawmaker who crossed to ADC then and that of PDP candidate.
Hon. Akin Alabi for the first time in the history of Egbeda/Ona-Ara On 25 July 2019 emerged as chairman, house committee on intergovernmental affairs despite been a first timer in the Green Chamber where he performed excellently. In 2023, Hon. Akin Alabi reclaimed his position at Green Chamber and won with wide margin to defeated Accord and PDP candidates respectively.
Akin Alabi's legislative Performance
On 6 October 2020 Alabi filed a motion to dissolve the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) of the Nigeria police force. Under the motion he stated that "Policing in Nigeria continues to fall short of modern practices where citizens should be treated with utmost respect and decorum, therefore making it very difficult for an average citizen to truly trust that the police are their friends.
Also, following the COVID-19 pandemic, University of Lagos (UNILAG) commenced e-learning as a measure to contain its spread. However, this was shortly followed by complaints of high data cost, network issues, inability to access the provided platform, system malfunctions, among others. Having received complaints from students, with this Hon Akin Alabi filed a motion on the urgent need for UNILAG to review the university's e-learning system. In this motion he noted that the advent of e-learning systems should make learning easier and more interesting and "not to frustrate the students in their efforts or have lecturers completely abandon their duties of educating the students."
On 15 December 2020, the worrisome increase of insecurity on Nigerian roads, Hon. Akin Alabi moved a motion to stop the Federal Government from procuring weapons for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Hon. Akin Alabi on November 9, 2021 moved a motion to curtail the excesses of online loan providers in the country. In this motion he stated that these companies have been operating outside the principles of fair and lawful processing of personal data as required under the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation and called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to provide better regulation for these financial service providers, and for the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to ensure strict adherence to the Nigerian Data Protection Regulation by all online loan providers. This motion has created a peaceful coexistence for many Nigerians and reduced the harassment from these online loan providers.
Hon. Akin Alabi also has contributions to some important bills and motions like the amendment of the administration of Criminal Justice Act, the motion restraining APCON from harassing online businesses, constitution amendment on the transfer of citizenship by female Nigerian citizens to mention a few.
Constituency Outreach
Even before joined politics, Hon. Akin Alabi has been a philanthropist who reach out to communities and individual in terms of support and development. This has becomes part of his daily routine and brought many impressive developments in 2020 to Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency in terms of unrellented Welfarism programs, community support, infrastructure, and human capital development.
In 2020 Hon. Akin launched #250m women empowerment for Egbeda/Ona-Ara business women, which has improved many businesses and individuals within both local governments. Also, The supplied of medical equipments to some primary healthcare in both Egbeda and Ona-Ara, construction of health care facilities, construction of block of classrooms across the constituency. In the same year Hon. Akin Alabi launched Better Call Akin, an initiative established to fight for constituents against police brutality, cheated and wrongly accused by law.
In 2022 Hon. Akin Alabi facilitated the construction of Olorunsogo-Oyinkansola road links Lagos-Ibadan express road. The road which as been abandoned for many years wear a new look through the effort of Hon. Akin Alabi. He also constucted many community roads in both Egbeda and Ona-Ara local government. In more than two decades, Hon. Akin Alabi facilitated a digital marketing for the constituency youths and distributed laptops and other digital marketing items after each Seminar and workshops. He sponsored some constituents on their educational career, talent buildup and businesses including the purchases of transformers for communities
In this year 2023, Hon Akin Alabi constructed for the first time in the history of Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency a modern stadium in in the constituency to boost sport activities and develop football talent among youths intheconstituency. He lobby for federal employment for constituency youths and empowerment programmes for constituency market traders and professional bodies. With all these and many others contributions from him, Hon. Akin Alabi won Federal Legislator of the year by Nigerian Students Merit Awards.
Without sentiment and unrealistic assumption, Hon. Akin Alabi's personality, educational backgrounds, legislative contributions, constituency outreach and commitment to the growth of his community and Nigeria in general, been a 2nd team member in Federal House of Representatives doubled with his leadership experience as a chairman committee on intergovernmental affairs, he deserves another substantial leadership position in the 10th Assembly.
Apart from his recent dedication and support for the incoming speaker of Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abass, Hon. Akin Alabi has demonstrated many legislative capacities which are needed to lead a substantial house commitee for better 10th Assembly.
Conclusively, the political atmosphere in the Peace Setter State may be kind to such political ideologies and leadership experience of someone like Hon. Akin Alabi and sooner or later he may definitely becomes number one citizen in the State. Thanks.
