The Peace Commission, Nigeria, TPCN organized its annual Peace Colloquium for the year 2025 tagged 'Integrating Peace Education into Nigeria Secondary School Curriculum' and subthemed as 'Building a Culture of Peace among the younger generation to address age long national insecurity, terrorism and violence in Nigeria'.
The event which was held at the School Library hall of BISHOP PHILIPS ACADEMY IWOROAD IBADAN in Oyo State, Nigeria on Wednesday July 30, 2025 was massively attended by selected secondary school representatives, teachers, parents, members of the Oyo State Justices of the Peace ably led by the State Chairman Barrister Michael Akinbowale, JP, members of the World Citizen Peace Ambassadors Nigeria ably led by the National Coordinator Amb. Dr. James Olugbohunmi, JP who incidentally was the distinguished chairman of the event.
The event has in attendance principals of various schools serving and retired as lots of academia and stakeholders of the education sector were on ground among them were Dr. Chief Akin Allen, Surveyor Lasisi Kamil Oluranti of The Polytechnic of Ibadan, and Teacher Ayoola Bayonle of Community Grammar School Airport Ibadan and host of others.
The Peace Commission Nigeria TPCN ably led by its founder Ambassador Revd Olubunmi Adeleye Thomas JP a renowned Peace advocate, Academia, Lay Magistrate, Justice of the Peace and human Rights activist who recently won an international award in Peace advocacy from the United States, gave the opening remark at the event, he advocated strongly that 'to check and address insecurity and the seemingly unending menace of terrorism and other culture of violence, now is the time for government to integrate peace education into Nigeria Secondary School Curriculum.
According to the advocacy postulated, Amb Revd Olubunmi Adeleye Thomas JP the Executive Director of the TPCN argued that 'Building the Culture of Peace from the minds of the younger generation now will certainly ensure peace for all in the future to come'.
The event was well packaged as it was streamlined into three sessions.
The first session was a Keynote address delivered by Amb. Ogunnaike Oluseyi, Esq., Registrar of the African Institute for Justices of the Peace, Nigeria. He emphasized the critical role that education can play in promoting a culture of peace, tolerance, and understanding among the youth.
He noted in his address that the colloquium would bring together a diverse array of stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, civil society leaders, and students, to deliberate on the importance of peace education and its potential to transform the Nigerian society.
And the second session featured a debate contest between Bishop Philips Academy School I and II, with the topic "Now is the Time to Integrate Peace Education into Nigeria Secondary School Curriculum'.
The academic exercise was quiet encouraging as the students dealt deeper in arguments for and against.
The third session was a discussion session were the Executive Director of The Peace Commission Nigeria Amb. Revd Olubunmi Adeleye Thomas JP engaged two eminent special guest in an interactive session before the audience with punitive and concrete questions to wake our ideas that Peace Education is an imperative.
The guest engaged were Amb. Odusanya Francis, JP, an Snr. Assist Registrar, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo and High Chief (Dr.) Amb. Akeeb Adékúnlé ÀLÀBÍ, JP, DFAIJP, WCPA, MNIM, MNUJ who incidentally is the Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Iwo City Polytechnic, Iwo Osun State Nigeria.
The session was highly interesting as it engaged the audience for a contributory discussion and questions and answer.
The Chairman of the Occasion, Amb. Dr. James Olugbohunmi, JP, charged the younger generation to be more peaceful in all their dealings to foster a more peaceful society.
In a remarkable achievement, Amb. Revd. Olubunmi Adeleye Thomas JP. the Founder of The Peace Commission, Nigeria, who is presently a recipient of a prestigious international Peace Prize of the Walter Enloe Peace Education Grant Award by World Citizen Peace USA awarded certificates and prizes to the debating school students and the two schools.
It is noteworthy that out of the numerous Peace proposals in contest across the world, 160 entries were selected and out of which the best 40 were reselected from 13 countries of the world by competent assessors, thereafter the best 5 was unanimously selected and out of the best five, the most outstanding Peace project was that of Amb. Revd Olubunmi Adeleye Thomas JP, and thus an Award Letter was issued to congratulate him from the World Citizen Peace in the United States and a cash prize of $500 was wired to prosecute and support his crusade for peace.
