Oyo APC Condemns Proposed Social Event Taxes, Lauds Federal Government's Action on Hijacked Properties
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has strongly condemned the reported introduction of taxes payable by sponsors and organizers of social events to the state government, describing the policy as anti-people, ill-conceived, and unacceptable. The party has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to immediately rescind the decision, citing the harsh economic climate and the burden of existing taxes on residents.
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC also commended the Federal Government's recent efforts to retrieve hijacked properties in the state, saying it vindicates the party's stance on the issue. The party had previously accused the Makinde administration of state-sponsored land grabbing, and the Federal Government's action has exposed the governor's alleged abuse of office.
The APC recalled its warnings against the grabbing of land belonging to ARCEDEM, NIHORT, Radio Nigeria, and other organizations, which were ignored by the governor. The party believes the Federal Government's position is clear, and the encroachment on these properties was not done in the public interest.
The APC's statement reads: "We call on Gov. Makinde to rescind his decision to force residents to pay inherent taxes before hosting any social event in the state. This policy is akin to pushing citizens to the wall, given the nation's fragile economy and the existing tax burden on residents. The introduction of entertainment taxes at this time will further subject the people to hardship and frustration."
The party urged the state government to suspend the policy immediately, emphasizing that the timing is inopportune, given the economic challenges facing residents.
